Bhubaneswar : Odisha is in the grip of a strong cold spell, with temperatures plunging across the state. Every district has now recorded minimum temperatures under 20°C, and in the past 24 hours alone, ten locations reported lows below 12°C.
Daringbadi remained the coldest spot at 8°C, followed closely by Phulbani at 9°C. Several other regions also shivered under sharp temperature dips — Rourkela touched 10.2°C, Bhadrak 10.5°C, Angul and Jharsuguda 10.6°C, Keonjhar 10.8°C, Bhawanipatna 11.4°C, Koraput 11.5°C, and Nabarangpur 11.6°C.
Adding to the chill, fog has thickened since early morning. Dense fog blanketed parts of Sundargarh, while Kalahandi witnessed light fog in the last 24 hours. The fall in nighttime temperatures is amplifying the cold, reducing visibility and causing inconvenience for early commuters. Interior and southern districts are feeling the cold more intensely, with fog conditions more pronounced than in other regions.
According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, a cold wave is expected to sweep through Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Angul, Cuttack, Khordha, and Kandhamal districts by Sunday night.
Twin Cities Continue to Chill at 13°C
Bhubaneswar and Cuttack too are witnessing a significant dip in temperatures. Over the past day, the minimum dropped from 15°C to 13°C.
-
Cuttack registered 13.6°C, which is 5.1°C below normal
-
Bhubaneswar recorded 13°C, a sharp 6.4°C below normal
Central Meteorological Scientist Umashankar Das highlighted that these temperatures show a clear departure from seasonal norms. Bhubaneswar alone has seen a 1.2°C decline over the last three days, as confirmed by the Regional Meteorological Centre.
Coastal and Interior Odisha See Large Deviations
Nighttime temperatures across coastal Odisha and nearby regions are currently 3–4°C below average, with minimums staying under 20°C for the second successive day. Interior districts are witnessing even steeper drops, ranging from 3–6°C below normal.
The Regional Meteorological Centre warns that nighttime temperatures are set to decline even further over the next 48 hours.
Cold to Intensify in Several Districts
As per the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, districts such as Sundargarh, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Koraput, Rayagada, and Nabarangpur will experience more intense cold in the coming days.
In Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 14°C, with surrounding areas facing similar conditions. The weakening of sea breeze flow toward inland belts is also causing nighttime temperatures to slide in coastal districts.
Within the next week, coastal Odisha may see minimum temperatures dip by another 2–3°C, according to the weather office.
