Jajpur Road: A shocking incident of domestic violence unfolded in Vyasanagar on Saturday night, where a woman, Bela Purti, tragically lost her life after being brutally assaulted by her husband, Bhagirathi Purti. The couple lived in the Chunbhati Plot area of Ward 25, a predominantly tribal neighbourhood.
Police said the attack took place when Bhagirathi, a daily wage earner, returned home heavily intoxicated. An argument erupted after Bela confronted him over his habitual drinking. What began as a verbal spat quickly turned violent, with Bhagirathi allegedly raining punches on his wife. He reportedly shoved her to the ground and kicked her repeatedly in the chest and abdomen.
Neighbours, alarmed by the commotion, rushed Bela to the Community Health Centre at Jajpur Road. Despite their efforts, the mother of six succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
The incident has sparked anger and grief within the local tribal community. Police from Jajpur Road station reached the spot soon after being informed, took the body for inquest procedures, and arrested Bhagirathi. He is currently being interrogated in custody.
The case was registered following a complaint lodged by Bela’s son-in-law, Ram Singh Munda, under Case No. 693/25. A scientific team has begun a thorough investigation, and the body has been sent to Danagadi Medical College for postmortem to ascertain the precise cause of death.
