
Bhubaneswar : A special programme for the distribution of Certified Seed Potato for Rabi 2025 under the State Sector Scheme “Development of Potato, Vegetable & Spices” was held today across Jagamohanpur, Keutapada and Dhurushia in Athagarh. Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo attended the event as the Chief Guest and handed over certified seed potatoes to farmers, marking a major push toward strengthening potato cultivation in the State.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the government’s priority to boost potato productivity, minimize dependency on imported produce, and reinforce the agricultural value chain. He reaffirmed the State Government’s steadfast commitment to empowering farmers through enhanced schemes, timely support, and access to quality planting material.
Upon arrival, dignitaries, officials, and participants listened to the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
In his welcome address, Shri Kalunge Gorakh Waman, Director of Horticulture, underscored the importance of distributing high-quality potato seeds to improve yield levels and ensure better returns for farmers.
Athagarh MLA Shri Ranendra Pratap Swain motivated farmers to adopt high-yielding certified seed varieties and modern agricultural practices to achieve higher production during the Rabi season.
Shri Niti Ranjan Sen, Managing Director of OSSC, briefed attendees on the corporation’s efforts to ensure timely procurement and distribution of certified seed potatoes across Odisha to meet the rising demand.
So far, 1,40,000 quintals of seed potato have been dispatched statewide, out of which 91,633 quintals have already been distributed among farmers in various districts. In Cuttack district alone, plans have been drawn up to cover 800 hectares under potato cultivation this Rabi, with 270 hectares earmarked for Athagarh subdivision.
Following the formal programme, officials carried out the distribution of certified seed potatoes, after which a demonstration planting session was conducted to guide farmers on proper cultivation techniques.
Among others, Shri Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde, Collector & District Magistrate (Cuttack), Dr. Prafulla Kumar Bhanja, Joint Director of Horticulture, Shri Subrat Kumar Chand, Deputy Director of Horticulture, along with Assistant Directors and Assistant Horticulture Officers, participated in the event.
