Mumbai : The Indian film industry has been struck by a wave of sorrow in 2025, a year that has already taken several beloved artists. In a deeply heartbreaking turn of events, veteran superstar Dharmendra — fondly remembered as Bollywood’s original “He-Man” — passed away at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89. His demise comes merely days before what would have been his 90th birthday, amplifying the grief felt across the country and beyond.
The news has cast a shadow of melancholy over Bollywood, which is still recovering from the reported deaths of acclaimed stars Pankaj Dheer, Satish Shah, and Asrani earlier in October. Fans and celebrities alike have expressed profound shock at losing yet another pillar of Indian cinema.
Family, Fans, and Film Fraternity in Deep Sorrow
According to reports, Dharmendra had been battling health complications for some time, resulting in fewer public appearances. During his recent treatment at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, several industry stalwarts—including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda, and Ameesha Patel—visited him to inquire about his condition.
He leaves behind a large and close-knit family: his first wife Prakash Kaur; his second wife and renowned actress Hema Malini; sons Sunny and Bobby Deol; and daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. Social media platforms have been inundated with heartfelt messages as fans and notable personalities pay tribute to the Deol family and the legendary actor.
A Timeless Legacy That Will Continue to Shine
Dharmendra’s illustrious career spanned more than sixty years, during which he acted in over 300 films. From Sholay and Phool Aur Patthar to Satyakam, Chupke Chupke, Dharam Veer, and Anupama, his performances carved a permanent place in Indian cinematic history.
His commanding presence earned him titles such as “He-Man of Bollywood,” “Garam Dharam,” and “Action King.” Beyond acting, he also produced films and briefly served as a Member of Parliament. In recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012.
Audiences last enjoyed his on-screen charm in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, co-starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. Fans will get to see him one final time in Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis, a gripping war drama based on the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal and the Battle of Basantar during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Featuring Agastya Nanda in the lead, the film is scheduled for a Christmas release later this year — a poignant farewell to a legend.
Final Moments and Last Goodbye
Police sources toldThe Indian Express that Dharmendra breathed his last on Monday, November 24. He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in October after experiencing breathlessness. Following weeks of treatment, he was discharged on November 12 and continued his recovery at home, where he eventually passed away peacefully.
Born in 1935, Dharmendra married his first wife, Prakash Kaur, in 1954. The couple shares four children — Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta Deol, and Ajeeta Deol. In 1979, he tied the knot with actor Hema Malini, and they have two daughters, Esha and Ahana.
