Kalinganagar : Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK) has entered its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of transformative growth, technological leadership, and community-focused development. Since its commissioning in 2015, TSK has grown into a nationally significant steel-making hub, recognized for its advanced production capabilities, innovation-driven operations, and deep socio-economic contribution.
Beginning with a 3 MTPA steel-making capacity, TSK has now grown into an 8 MTPA facility with cumulative investments exceeding ₹50,000 crore—making it Tata Steel’s largest organic expansion project to date. This journey also witnessed the successful commissioning of India’s largest blast furnace, reinforcing TSK’s critical role in the nation’s mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Today, the Kalinganagar plant manufactures over 100 grades of premium steel, substantially reducing the country’s reliance on imported steel products.

Reflecting on this milestone, T. V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Steel, said:
“Kalinganagar is more than a project—it is a defining chapter in Tata Steel’s legacy. It represents a forward-looking model that blends a century of knowledge with cutting-edge technology and an unshakeable belief in inclusive growth. The last decade at Kalinganagar has tested our capabilities and strengthened our purpose, and I am deeply grateful to our employees, communities, partners, and the Government of Odisha for their continuous support.”
The establishment of TSK marked a historic shift in Tata Steel’s relationship with Odisha. For decades, the state served primarily as a rich source of raw materials for the Jamshedpur plant. With TSK’s setting up, large-scale steel production became anchored within Odisha itself. Over the last ten years, Tata Steel has invested more than ₹100,000 crore in the state, making Odisha its leading investment hub.

A global frontrunner in smart manufacturing, the Kalinganagar unit gained international recognition from the World Economic Forum, becoming the first plant in India—and the second in the world—to receive the Lighthouse designation for 4th Industrial Revolution technologies.
Sustainability has remained a core operating principle for TSK. The plant maintains 33% green cover, functions as a Zero Effluent Discharge (ZED) facility, and ensures 100% utilization of solid waste. In 2024, TSK achieved the ResponsibleSteel™ certification, reinforcing its commitment to climate-responsible, ethically sourced, and environmentally conscious steelmaking.
TSK also champions inclusion and equal opportunity. Approximately 30% of its workforce represents women, Persons with Disabilities, LGBTIQA+ groups, and communities covered under Affirmative Action, positioning it as a progressive and diverse industrial workplace.
Beyond its industrial success, TSK stands out as a model of community partnership. Through the Tata Steel Foundation, more than 14 lakh people have benefited over the last decade via education, health, livelihoods, and social empowerment initiatives. Facilities such as Loyola School and the 100-bed Tata Steel Medica Hospital are transforming access to quality learning and healthcare. Initiatives like the Navjeevan Cooperative Ltd., run by women artisans of Kalinganagar, have generated sustainable income opportunities for more than 100 individuals, supporting long-term socio-economic resilience.
Looking ahead, Tata Steel Kalinganagar is preparing for its next major transformation with expansion plans to become a 16 MTPA steel-making complex, signalling a future of continued growth, innovation, and shared prosperity.
